What is pure tone audiometry?

Pure tone audiometry is a hearing test used to determine the presence or absence of hearing loss. If you have hearing loss, the audiologist will be able to determine both type and degree of hearing loss.

Pure-tone thresholds indicate the softest sound audible to an individual. Hearing sensitivity is plotted on an audiogram as below :

Mild hearing loss (21-40 dB) : Mild hearing loss may cause inattention, difficulty hearing in noise, and increased listening efforts. Person with mild hearing loss may not hear soft speech. Children may be fatigued after listening for long periods.

Moderate hearing loss (41-70 dB) : Moderate hearing loss may affect language development, interaction with others, self-esteem and may causes decreased speech intelligibility. Patients with this degree of loss have trouble hearing some or all conversational speech.

Severe hearing loss (71-90 dB) : Severe hearing loss may affect voice quality.

Profound hearing loss (>90 dB) : With profound hearing loss (deafness), speech and language   deteriorate.

How long does the test take?

20 to 25 minutes.

How will I receive my results?

Your audiologist will review your test results with you when your testing is completed.
